2015 Ford Taurus 3.5L TI-VCT

We bought this car from Cincinnati Cadillac. It was a really smooth cash “as is” transaction. It presented way above anything else we had seen even above this price, so my daughter bought it.

It came with109k miles, so its expected to need a round of service and it does. I suspect it has all original in it.

It didn’t feel real perky when we drove it at the dealer and sure enough the next day the check engine light came on. I sent her a link to Cataclean.

Using the OBDLink MX+ OBD2 Bluetooth Scanner (compatible with Forscan), we found multiple cylinder misfire codes. At 109,000 miles, with the engine running rough and lacking power, a complete ignition system service made sense. Given the relatively low cost and straightforward access to these components, we opted for a comprehensive replacement of all spark plugs, coil packs, and fuel injectors rather than spending time on extensive diagnostics.

This approach, while not always recommended, was justified by:

  • Time efficiency
  • High mileage (109k)
  • Multiple misfire codes
  • Rough running condition
  • Easy access to components
  • Reasonable parts cost

It was a pretty easy job. It didn’t pay close attention, but it probably only took about an hour and a half. Everything is pretty straight forward. I did spill a lot of gas from the fuel rail, but that was the only “issue” i had.

It is still making some noise, but certainly running better. We may to the timing and water pump this winter. We need to get rid of the Focus now.

I think it still needs a new catalytic converter and probably should also take care of the timing and water pump now with the miles it has. If those are done, it should last a long time. These 3.5L are supposed to be an amazingly reliable engine.
