MODS: From Documentation to Skid Steers – Building Anything, Owning Everything

Hey folks, I want to share something that’s been cooking in my brain about MODS (Manufacturing On Demand Systems) and how it all fits together.

#WeHaveTheTools

I’ve been working on mapping out my systems – you know, the usual stuff: documenting The Rig, organizing projects, tracking maintenance on vehicles and equipment. But this morning, while messing with Draw.io and thinking about asset organization, something clicked.

What if all this documentation and organization work isn’t just about managing my own projects? What if it’s the foundation for something bigger – a system that helps people build their own tools, machines, and eventually, whatever they want?

The Vision

Picture this: A 3D interactive system where you can:

  • Zoom into any part of a project
  • See how everything connects
  • Access build documentation
  • Track progress
  • Manage resources
  • Connect with other builders

Start with basic tools, progress to 3D printers, move up to CNC machines, and keep scaling until you’re building your own skid steer. Each project builds on the knowledge and systems from the previous ones.

#RollYourOwn

This isn’t just about documentation or project management. It’s about creating a platform that helps people own their means of production. From the smallest tool to the largest piece of equipment, everything documented, everything open source, everything buildable.

Is it a massive undertaking? Hell yeah. But breaking it down:

  1. Start with solid documentation systems
  2. Build project management tools
  3. Create precision 3D models
  4. Develop build instructions
  5. Test with the community
  6. Scale up project complexity

Each step adds value. Each tool built helps build the next one. The system grows as the community uses it.

#OpenSourceEverything

This aligns perfectly with what groups like Open Source Ecology are doing with their Global Village Construction Set. But we’re adding our own twist – merging traditional fabrication with modern tech, all while keeping it practical and achievable.

I know what you’re thinking – “Scott, you’re making more work for yourself again.” And yeah, you’re right! But this feels different. This feels like all these pieces – The Rig, The Hub, MODS, the documentation systems – they’re all coming together into something that could actually help people build real things.

Where We’re At

Right now, I’m:

  • Building out system documentation
  • Creating project templates
  • Testing on real-world projects
  • Learning Blender for precision modeling
  • Working on Godot for interactivity

It’s a lot. But each piece moves us toward that bigger vision.

What’s Next

The immediate focus is getting the basics right:

  • Solid documentation system
  • Clear project templates
  • Asset organization
  • Build guides

Then we scale up, one project at a time.

Join In

This is bigger than just me. If you’re interested in building things, owning your tools, and being part of a community of makers, let’s connect. Whether you’re into 3D printing, CNC machines, fabrication, or just like building stuff, there’s a place for you in this.

Remember: We have the tools. Let’s build something amazing.

Whether you’re a gearhead, a tech enthusiast, or someone who believes in a more open world, you’ll find a home here. Check out our projects, I try to stay active on Discord, and have sporadically been active on Hive, Odysee, Youtube, and GitHub
